Like tens of thousands of our fellow modelers, I have a soft spot in my heart for Model Railroader , whose page count and circulation seem to decline w ith each passing year . Waukesha's response? With every issue, Kalmbach's drumbeat to persuade its readers to switch to digital grows louder and more incessant. Admittedly, Kalmbach's staff have launched two stunning print annuals that defy that trend - yet their effort seems unrelenting - one recent Kalmbach editorial stated clearly that they saw the future as digital - we are on notice. Changing their company name to Kalmbach Media Co. settles the matter as far as they are concerned. The trouble with Kalmbach's approach seems to be they are telling their readers - whose subscription dollars have made it perfectly clear they prefer print - to go digital. Photographer Unknown Visit Built in 00 scale, this is a layout that promotes the idea that everyone has room for layout. It is covered extensively in YouTube videos. Paul Allen's master work features a hidden CCTV camera; notice the video screen perched above the layout in the above photograph. It has been featured in Model Rail and Hornby magazines. It is described as a shunting puzzle 47 x 7 inches in size.

Today, I read in Bernie Kempinski's blog about a technique John King uses on his B&O layout in HO (see photo above). Depicting an area of Virginia known for apple orchards, King models Winchester, Virginia known for cold storage facilities for the fruit industry. So how does King accomplish this? Instead of a nondescript skirt, John fills the area under his layout with "antique" wooden fruit boxes (each labeled as such by the fruit company). Now I recognize that some might quarrel with my description of his fruit boxes as a skirt, I will stick to my guns unless some can argue persuasively that I have missed the mark in calling them so. There is even a chance that King did not intend his wooden fruit boxes to serve as a skirt - that he only intended them for storage - yet
