An introduction by Swedish diorama specialist Toni Canfora is followed by a thorough examination of nine spectacular dioramas. All tell a story. Model railroaders, particularly those in the larger scales, will benefit from Editor Stu Fone's clearly written and excellently focused publication - not sure whether to call it a book or a special issue of a magazine.
All nine dioramas covered share one thing - they tell a story. Model railroaders often forget this - including myself. We meticulously build a structure, plop it down somewhere, add a few vehicles and figures and call it a scene. No.
All nine dioramas covered share one thing - they tell a story. Model railroaders often forget this - including myself. We meticulously build a structure, plop it down somewhere, add a few vehicles and figures and call it a scene. No.
We need to think about how these figures are interacting with each other - are they talking to each other? Are they cooperating on some task - fixing a broken machine, lifting something together? We overlook these considerations too often. Perhaps it is because to tell a story we must go through an additional step - modifying a figure, leaving a building door open, adding some detail that we must either purchase or scratch build or modify.
This Airfix publication is chock full of techniques that can be applied to any model railroad. An added bonus is a listing at the end of a multitude of specialty suppliers to include their web sites.
Enjoy.
