Project

When your tools and supplies have no definite place, they tend to get lost and not returned to their proscribed place. A solution is to divide your drawers. First buy a few sheets of white foam core from Staples or some other supplier. White is best as it makes it easier to see the contents of your drawer.

You will need a hobby knife and a supply of sharp No. 11 blades to cut your foam core. The key to straight lines is to always use sharp blades. First measure your drawers and then cut the bottom of your divider. Each divider frame should be low enough so your divider can be fitted into the drawer - if this advice does not make sense, it soon will be once you begin to install your divider. You may wish to omit a frame and just get straight to creating the cubbies with foam core internal dividers.  A try square will come in handy too (see photo). Take the contents of each drawer and use them to size the divided areas. Mark where the dividers will go using a pencil and a square. Then cut the individual dividers.

You will need a hot glue gun to assemble all the dividers. You will have a few seconds to make any adjustments. Be sure all dividers are plumb. See my blog posting about how to use a hot glue gun to its best advantage - the suggestions are too lengthy to include here. I used Avery 5165 labels to label my organizers.  All four photographs are of my three Harbor Freight workbenches.

This technique can be applied to any workbench with drawers. You could make your dividers out of wood but the results would be more labor intensive, more expensive, and heavier. Not to mention, that once finished they would need to be painted white to get the same appearance as our foam core.
