As the Author's note explains "This is the first of three Men-At-Arms titles on the organization, uniforms  and equipment of the US Army in Word War II." I picked up  my copy at a local toy soldiers show - cool stuff can be found at these shows - scenery supplies, figures, and the ability to browse historical books.

Interestingly, "the active strength of the US Army in 1939 was 174,000, making it a third-rate power".

On a personal note, if my readers will permit, my father and Uncle Paul were two of those men so World War II history has always interested me. Interestingly, as my father saw no combat, having spent the war in England, he and men like him were not discharged until 1946.

This profusely illustrated book is numbered 342 of Osprey's Men-At-Arms Series. Illustrations consist of black and white photographs and colored drawings. Chapters are "The Wartime Army"; "Organization"; "Uniforms"; "Combat Uniforms"; "Web Gear & Equipment"; "Rations"; "Small Arms"; "Amphibious Vehicles"; "Tanks in the Pacific"; "Pacific Theatre Campaign Summary"; "Medical Services"; "Divisional Campaign Service & Shoulder Patches"; "Bibliography"; and "The Plates".

My Fn3 (1:20.3 scale) model railroad is set during WWII as it affects Hawaii. These illustrations were important to getting my figures right. Currently, my figures are stand-ins but at some later point, they will be replaced by figures more closely following illustrations found in this book.

If you are modeling railroads affected by wars, you may wish to consult the appropriate Osprey www.ospreypublishing.com book (Series Editor: Martin Windrow) for the war your railroad depicts (Civil War, Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII).

Good luck.

Postscript

And if you don't think there is a published photo book on some aspect of military history that would enhance your modeling, think again. I once thumbed through a photobook on WWI Ottoman Submarines  - sort of proves that seek and ye shall find.
