There is something to learn from almost every book on the subject of dioramas - either case studies or books focused on techniques. This inspiring book is about an inspiring diorama by Claude Joachim. There is a companion book to Capturing Clervaux A Modeler's Tale by Claude Joachim (to be reviewed separately). Joachim's diorama tells the story of a little town caught up in the Battle of the Bulge. The time is December 1944 and the Luxembourg town is Clervaux. One hundred troops of the 101st US Infantry Battalion took refuge in its 800-year old castle on December 17th. His buildings are in 1:35 scale but there is compression in the spaces between the buildings.

Joachim's soft cover book includes historical photographs for comparison. There are countless scratch building techniques shared within these 144 pages.

I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking inspiration with their own scratch building efforts. As this diorama has been on public display, I would go further and encourage anyone visiting Europe to try to leave some room to see this diorama first-hand. Joachim raises the bar for us all.
