A great book and at 352 page, a thoroughly researched one. But readers are cautioned - the subject of Chiddix and Simpson's book was a common carrier, not a plantation railroad. I did benefit greatly from reading this book - I have had it for years and do not think I have fully absorbed all I can learn from these pages.

Chiddix is an interesting fellow - a decorated pioneer in the cable television industry who resides in the Denver, Colorado area. During a narrow gauge convention, I have been to Jim's gorgeous home to visit his HO scale Hawaiian layout - very ambitious project.

Its ten chapters are:
from sailor to trainman (Benjamin Franklin Dillingham)
miles and miles of track
sweet gold of sugar
pineapples aboard
cargoes along the route
passengers & timetables
sloooooooowing down
a wartime railroad
the end of the line
railroading resurrected
