Commissioned by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and completed in 1835, it was the largest railroad bridge in the United States and the first multi-span masonry railroad bridge to be built on a curve. It has been designed a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. It was named for the B&O's first president, Philip E. Thomas
