Great profusely illustrated book. Buy it! Though you will have to hold your nose on one score. Say it isn't so --- even the good old boys at Kalmbach are having books printed in China - Gosh! Golly Gee! Despite their outward appearances, seems they are a bit of a savvy bunch there in Waukesha. How about keeping some jobs here in the US?

This book is a breath of fresh air from Kalmbach. Gone are the "golly gee"s and "gosh"s that seem to permeate too much of what emanates from their editor's pen or should I say "keyboard". CJ Riley tells it like it is - he encourages us to model the truth even if some of it is disheartening - such as Jim Crow facilities. My friend Carl Barna asked about my use of ballast on my Fn3 Oahu Sugar Company. Here is how I answered him:

Good question – I assume you are asking about my Fn3 Oahu Sugar Company.

I examined many photos of Oahu – both of agricultural areas and railroad roadbedThe earth in Oahu seems to be red – see Photo 2
I never saw any ballast on this line – remember, plantation railroads were poorly maintained as were many narrow gauge railroad Also recall that there would be no ballast in tracks that were laid temporarily in sugar cane fields – plantation field tracks were laid almost the way a child would lay his Lionel sectional track on the living room carpet. So I used no ballast on my layout except on a swing-out gate or duck-under if one chooses. I was going to leave it un-scenicked but then got carried away and scenicked it and used some O scale ballast I had on hand.

A photo of a liquor store interior was photoshopped and then applied to foam core Second floor also has a photograph of a 1920s kitchen applied to foam core - I used full sheet label paper to make the job go faster (so I would not need to let the spray adhesive dry overnight I installed the hanging neon sign with hot glue - thought that truly hanging the sign would leave a bit too fiddly - particularly where it will be placed on my layout The wooden with tarpaper (black photo developing tape) awning has been installed and weathered Two of the second floor windows are ajar All three windows have window shades - made of construction paper - installed at varying lengths My first near-rooftop sign was discarded and replaced by a smaller sign that would be more true t…
