I need hundreds of plants to populate my Fn3 layout depicting Oahu so buying model plants marketed to military modelers and diorama builders is out of the question. If you buy such plants from a company marketing their ware to military modelers you can expect to pay $1.00 per plant, these plants are only 10 cents each. Also out of the question is hand making from scratch each plant – as some do according to some books I have read. If you look at the photograph displayed by the manufacturer, you will come away thinking these look awful (toy-like).
I paint each plastic plant with dark and lighter green crafts paint that one can buy for about $ 1.29/bottle – sometime less on sale. I take ordinary paper clips from my office and cut them up for the base. Next step – heat up the base (cannot think of a better word to call them) using a gas flame from my kitchen range. I use a large plier and then while hot insert into the hole at the bottom of the painted plant. To keep myself safe, I use a tweezer to hold the plant itself and steady my hand against my kitchen counter. Keep steady as the now soft plastic hardens and you are finished. Reminder – Only the smallest plants require a metal base – most of the plants have a stem that can be inserted easily into a pink foam layout provided one starts the hole with an awl.
