Essay - Nine Diorama Techniques Applicable to Model Railroads

This diorama displayed at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum showcases nine (9) Interesting diorama techniques applicable to model railroads. They are

1. Benchwork Horizon raises up to be above the foreground (a technique seen in some British exhibition layouts but rarely if ever seen on an American layout)

2. At the right is a cutout depicting what is below ground.

3. Cutout of building at left against edge of diorama is cutout to show interior.

4. Dark surrounding to focus attention on the diorama itself (the equivalent on a model railroad would be a dark valance, fascia, and wings - to use a term pioneered by Iain Rice).

5. Bridge is dimensional, not just painted on

6. Forced perspective is employed with vehicles and buildings

7. Careful descriptive labels at fascia enhance the viewing experience.

8. Careful use of lighting

9. Monochrome buildings are employed to focus attention on the story being told - the street life and the movement of mail.
