Chewton Mendip is a wonderful layout in my mind. So, what can we learn from this exhibition layout? First, notice how much explanatory material is posted at an angle for easier reading at the front of the layout - three panels in all. Also notice how much pride the owner takes in letting his audience know that his layout was the subject of an article in Railway Modeller - apparently this magazine gives special rectangular stickers to owners of layouts that have appeared in its pages. Other stickers - which I find distracting probably tout either organizations the owner belongs to or commemorate shows he has been invited to exhibit at (quite an honor I suspect - might even carry some financial remuneration to offset the high costs of automotive travel in Europe).
My guess is that the valance is not very effective in hiding the edge of the sky (read "backdrop") and instead is largely a device for hiding the lighting.
I also noticed from the control panel that this is quite a complicated track plan with turnouts galore - sort of proves that a somewhat compact exhibition layout can accommodate many turnouts.
