So what could be improved here - at least in this blogger's opinion? Before going forward, I should state that this layout does represent a remarkable effort and anyone building such a layout (note the bound volumes of Model Railroader beneath) should be congratulated.
That said, my opinion is that this layout could be improved if it ditched these seven shortcomings:
1. No curved corners to the backdrop - a backdrop seeks to weave magic into a scene - we know that the sky has no corners.
2. Wood grain surround is distracting - the surround should help keep the visitor focused on the scene or scenes presented
3. Wings are too narrow.
4. Layout at below eye level
5. No description of layout name or place depicted or scale is provided
6. Fascia too narrow
7. Valance too thin to obscure the lighting
