Helpful Hint
The current issue (November-December 2023) of Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette features a layout (probably the On3 Colorado Central & Southern by Dan Windolph) with an interesting message on its fascia. At various places on its fascia the location name, mile post, and elevation is posted. While posting location and mile post is seen on some layouts, this is the first time I have seen the elevation posted. I think it is a wonderful idea that at little cost or effort imparts to visitors a bit of atmosphere regarding the layout visited.
Bear in mind that the ceiling height of all rooms devoted to model railroads prohibits an accurate rendition of mountainous heights - modelers rely on their backdrops to achieve some semblance of elevation - that is until some modelers had the idea of citing the elevation on their backdrops.
Beyond just imparting some atmosphere to the modeled scene, by citing the elevation. Around the layout modeled elevation changes, perhaps one way to convey this is on the facade as changing the elevation of the modeled trackwork can only be done gradually if the model trains are to operate well.
