Visit - Dan Pickard's On30 Kinmont, A Cameo Layout

Visit

Appearing in the April 2023 Narrow Gauge Downunder, Kinmont is a great theatrical presentation of an On30 layout. To help attendees understand what they are seeing, the layout name - in white upper-case sans-serif lettering - is neatly applied to its valance. Australian Dan Pickard built his narrow-gauge exhibition layout with wings (borrowing a term from the theater) to obscure the ends of his curved backdrop. The flat black surround helps visitors focus on his layout. Which of our readers recalls model railroads whose garish skirts featured a train pattern? That was the extreme opposite of what Pickard strives for.

This nicely illuminated layout "captures the essence of the Australian bush". David Price has contributed an additional module Winch no. 3 which they display together.

At the time of this writing, this layout's appearance at the Sunbury Model Railway Exhibition (2019) was the subject of a YouTube video - yes, it does run. In this YouTube video, two panels flank Pickard's layout - posted are extensive write-ups of presumably the history of the prototype railroad being modeled. Also displayed at the 14th Australian Narrow Gauge ConventionKinmont is scheduled to appear in 2023 at the 15th iteration of same in Melbourne at which Pickard will deliver a clinic on layout presentation.

No doubt attendees of Pickard's clinic will learn a great deal from Dan about how to enhance layout presentation. Even if one's layout is not in the exhibition style, one can probably learn much from Pickard as many concepts commonly at work on exhibition layouts have applicability to those layouts that are not transportable.
