Visit - East Works in 009 Scale by James Hilton, A Cameo Layout

 Visit

East Works was built by James Hilton - a professional model builder - in 009 scale. Its dimensions are 110 cm x 34cm. It features a small clay mill. He does reveal that he grew up in a sleepy village in Chesire. His blog is ehlr.blogspot.com/p/the-ehlr.html . What makes this exhibition layout distinctive is that is has only one wing - as Iain Rice calls them - though this approach can be seen in a few other exhibition layouts. The term "wing" is borrowed from the theater industry. Even with only one wing, this exhibition layout is effective.

A very muted backdrop serves to draw viewers into the scene. Noteworthy is that he chose to label his valance with the name of the layout. Also interesting is his choice of valance/fascia/wing color - grey. A nice finishing touch is the deep fascia - always a good choice. Also noteworthy is the flat black skirt - which tends to eliminate distractions for viewers - their entire focus can be on the layout. His black skirt appears to be of solid construction; your blogger finds this more effective than fabric skirts. Fabric skirts are not optimum - first, they are not inexpensive per se, they tend to be a bit distracting as they have waves; and they require difficult sewing as they are made of thick material. Ask me how I know - I had a good friend and his wife who put many hours into sewing one for me and for which I am very grateful. Sewing a skirt is just too much work and certainly too much work to impose on a dear friend.
