Yes, hobby shops seem a dying breed and the model train shop even more so. Yet, remember there are shops out there catering to fantasy modelers and gamers that do carry many of the supplies we need to carry on our modeling. Above is a stash of items I recently (2021) purchased at Huzzah Hobbies in Ashburn, Virginia. As the photographs show, these brands are familiar to model railroaders.
Also be sure to get acquainted with local radio control hobby shops - they also may have some of the materials you need for your modeling efforts. Of course, other standbys are art supply stores and your local hardware store. Your local hardware store may be a good source for rattle cans of paint, Dremel Tools accessories, and sheet metal sized for hobbyists. Also, not to be overlooked is your local auto supply store for rattle cans of paint.
