Though at first glance, these four photographs may appear a bit repetitive, I have included all four as together they give an excellent insight into the techniques this diorama employs. These photographs of a diorama in the Postal Museum demonstrate techniques applicable to most model railroads. On its website, this diorama tells the story of "Overcoming Congestion". The Smithsonian National Postal Museum is located in Washington, DC near Union Station. Admission is free.
Note the cut-away of the multi-story foreground building on the left in Photo 4; this is a technique that model railroaders also utilize on some layouts. Also note that the Brooklyn Bridge painted on what seems to be a false front at the backdrop identifies this as New York City. The image of the Brooklyn Bridge has travelled far and wide - a friend has told me that in Italy a famous chewing gum brand used the Brooklyn Bridge as their logo.
Another interesting feature is that the foreground raises up steeply to a significantly higher horizon. Model railroaders would benefit from carefully consider where they want to locate their horizon on their backdrop.
