The title of editor Skinner's book may be a bit misleading; there is a great deal more within these covers than armor modeling.
First, it is a tribute to the famed Shep Paine - one of the fathers of the modern modeling diorama - from whom much can be learned by any model railroader. Shep passed away before this book could be completed and so much of the book was edited by Aaron Skinner. Don't let that dissuade you though from picking up a copy.
It is much more than a tribute - chapters include "Planning a Diorama" - for model railroaders this translates into guidance for planning a scene of their layout. And let's be clear, a scene must be planned. A haphazard assortment of figures and details will just not cut it. This effort probably does not come naturally to many of us - including myself. One way to achieve a coherent scene is to set the components up temporarily as best one can and then just leave them for a day or so and come back to them to see whether they achieve the layout builder's goals. Another chapter useful to model railroaders is "Building Structures".
If you are into large scale modeling, its "Posing and painting figures" chapter will prove invaluable.
So, if you are into large scale model railroading or you have been curious to read Shep Paine's writing, this 144-page book from Kalmbach is for you.
Royalties from the sale of this book will benefit the Shep Paine Education Fund.
